What is Espisiotomy?

The purpose of an episiotomy is to prevent tearing of multiple areas of the vagina while the head is delivering. Everything is done to stretch the perineum to avoid tearing but it is not until the very end that you can determine if the head is just too big.  In addition, the more controlled the delivery of the head the less chance of tearing.  If you decide, “I do not want an episiotomy” that is up to you.  However, if you let me use my 16 years of delivering babies you will likely have a better chance of getting either no episiotomy or a small straight easy to repair defect with minimal discomfort.  However, like anything in medicine the patient has the last word.  I am only here to facilitate the healthy non-traumatic delivery of your child.
